Saturday, January 24th Trial Lesson “Learn Pattern-making through Subtraction Cutting”

On Saturday, January 24th, we will hold a special trial lesson where you can experience Subtraction Cutting — a technique that nurtures creative ideas in form-making.

What is subtraction cutting?
It is an innovative pattern-making method based on draping, developed by UK fashion designer and educator Julian Roberts.
It is a highly creative approach to making a silhouette by “cutting out space” from the fabric, rather than cutting out the garment’s shape in the conventional way.

In this trial lesson, you will work directly with fabric and experience silhouette making through the use of space, while learning the fundamental principles of the technique.
Its open-ended process encourages forms shaped by coincidence and individuality, offering a unique creative experience.

“What does it mean to create forms by using space?”
“Why does a shape emerge when we subtract material?”
By exploring these questions, you will encounter a new way of thinking—different from traditional pattern-making—making this a rare and valuable learning opportunity.

Elodie Burette
Designer and freelance illustrator. Graduated from Studio Berçot. Has worked as a designer for Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Tory Burch, Aritzia and Beautiful People.

Shermeen Amamiya
Graduated from the National College of Arts, Josai University, and ESMOD Tokyo. Worked as a graphic designer and set designer at the children’s TV station Wicked, and as a marketing manager at Moody International.
