Shunta Nakajima
almost blackTransferred from ESMOD Osaka to the Paris campus in his second year, graduating in 2003. Subsequently worked as an assistant designer for Raf Simons, based in Antwerp. After returning to Japan, joined Mister Hollywood. In 2015, launched the menswear brand ALMOSTBLACK with Masaki Kawase, centered on the concept of “Post-Japonism.” Since 2020, has been holding exhibitions in Paris.
Why I Chose ESMOD
I have always wanted to experience diverse cultures abroad. My aspiration to become a designer began in high school when I watched a Raf Simons show that left a lasting impression. The fusion of streetwear and high fashion in his collection was electrifying. I chose ESMOD because of its Paris campus. I believed that being in Paris would bring me closer to the world I admired.
My first year at the Osaka campus helped me build a strong foundation, which enabled me to excel in Paris. The international environment, with classmates from various countries, was a valuable experience. In Paris, I attended as many fashion shows as possible, driven by a desire to absorb something from brands that were making a global impact. I was passionate and eager to learn everything I could.
Post-Graduation Journey
Twelve years after graduation, I launched my brand and held an exhibition in Paris, which was a deeply emotional milestone. Being able to showcase our work in a place where I once studied, surrounded by world-renowned brands, was incredibly gratifying. Experiencing different cultures during my student years made me appreciate my origins and encouraged me to revisit Japanese culture. With ALMOSTBLACK, we aim to highlight Japan’s hidden artists, exceptional craftsmanship, and outstanding materials and tailoring. I hope to share the brilliance of Japanese creativity with the world.
Perspective on Today’s Fashion World
The industry is currently facing a serious shortage of talent, and I hope more skilled individuals will join. However, if you don’t truly love fashion, it might not be the right path for you. The rigorous classes and heavy workload at ESMOD, in a way, test your dedication and commitment to the profession. I am deeply grateful to the instructors who persistently challenged and supported us.
Interestingly, I performed poorly in school. There were moments when I felt discouraged, but my peers, who shared the same aspirations, motivated me to keep going. I want to emphasize that poor grades don’t define your potential. If you have a strong passion for fashion, don’t give up—keep pushing forward.
A Message to Aspiring Fashion Designers
If you love fashion, don’t hesitate—start by studying at ESMOD. Even if you feel overwhelmed by the classes or think the number of assignments is impossible to manage, just give it your all and keep going. You’ll realize that every challenge contributes to your growth, and nothing you learn is ever wasted. This is the advice I wish I could have given my younger self during my student days.
